most people probably don't think of pelicans as winter birds, but that's when we get them here.

I keep coming back to look at this... it's so amazing because it looks like the snow forms a little peninsula going into the water and then it suddenly turns into birds. It's abstract art grounded in reality

I always thought they were from the south.
they started showing up here during the monster flood in 1993, and have been coming back ever since. these pelicans are distinctly different from the brown pelicans common in california, especially in feeding techniques. while the browns are plunge divers, the pelicans here scoop up fish while floating on the surface.
I guess I never really thought of whether or not they were winter birds They look pretty comfy in the snow!
i think most people associate them with warm coastal areas like california and florida. this time of year folks come from miles around to see the bald eagles, but to me the pelicans are much more fun to watch.
